C&G Trophy round-up

Fleming ton powers Notts

Cricinfo staff

June 25, 2006

Final points table

North Conference

Stephen Fleming led from the front for Nottinghamshire to take his side through to a nailbiting two-wicket win over Northamptonshire at Trent Bridge, with just two balls to spare. Fleming received good support from Chris Read (61) in his run-a-ball 121, and was there at the end with Greg Smith.

A superbly crafted unbeaten 111 from Chris Taylor and an aggressive 41 from Andre Botha helped Derbyshire beat Durham by five wickets with eight balls to spare at Derby. Durham needed to win to maintain any chance of reaching the final, although Lancashire's win meant they wouldn't have gone through in any chase. But for most of the day the match was within their grasp as Jimmy Maher notched a fine century and the bowlers kept Durham under the cosh. However, Taylor timed the chase to perfection as Derbyshire finished on a high.

Gavin Hamilton's magnificent 128-ball 131 wasn't enough for Scotland, who were beaten by Leicestershire at Edinburgh by 53 runs. Darren Maddy smashed a one-day best 167 off 145 balls.

A solid display from Worcestershire saw them to a convincing 50-run win over Yorkshire at Worcester, after Lou Vincent set them up with a brisk 83 and Graeme Hick smashed a violent 48 to take them up to 270 for 4. Yorkshire were never in a position to challenge the total, as the Worcestershire bowlers shared the wickets around to beat Yorkshire with three overs to spare.

Southern Conference

It was a remarkable game at the picturesque ground of Arundel as Sussex failed to chase down just 99 runs to beat Gloucestershire who were bundled out for 98 inside 37 overs. Sussex fell to 33 for 4 when Robin Martin-Jenkins threatened to haul them up to the required total with a run-a-ball 20. Wickets continued to fall, however, as James Averis (4 for 54) and Carl Greenidge (4 for 40) routed Sussex in 17.5 hectic overs, who fell short by just three runs.

Tim Phillips' 3 for 7 in four overs for Essex destroyed a second-string Surrey by six wickets at Chelmsford. Mark Pettini blitzed 57 from just 24 balls as Essex passed the required 129 runs in the 16th over.

Hampshire's top three batsmen all made brisk fifties to take their side to an imposing 310 for 7 against Glamorgan at Southampton. James Tomlinson then made sure Glamorgan got nowhere close to reaching their required target, grabbing four wickets as Glamorgan were routed for 145 in 32 overs.

Although Ireland bowled tidily to restrict Somerset to a middling total of 238 for 8 at Stormont, their batsmen capitulated to 165 all out to hand Somerset an easy 73-run win.

A brilliant 123 from Owais Shah, an England one-day discard, powered Middlesex to a tight nine-run win over Kent at Lord's. Despite 75 from Darren Stevens and a confident 70 from Joe Denly, the 20-year-old, Kent ran out of overs.
