Umpiring |

The Umpires Committee plans and implements the activities relating to umpiring.
Umpires have been divided into several panels:
Premier Panel
Comprises of 28 umpires. Ten of them form the SLC Elite Panel who officiate at international matches. Nominees to the ICC Panels are picked from among them.
Premier Panel umpires form two groups – 15 forming the Premier A Panel and 13 forming the B Panel. Currently Asoka de Silva & Tyronne Wijewardena serve on the ICC International Panel and Gamini Silva is an ICC TV umpire.
Other Panels
There are three other Panels:
1. Sara Trophy Tournament Panel – 43 umpires including 10 Fast Track Umpires with experience in the international circuit as well as those who have played national and first class cricket for over 10 years.
2. Division II Panel – 36 umpires officiating in the Division II matches
3. Division III – 170 umpires who come under the District Cricket Associations
Technical Committee
Headed by Director-Cricket Operations, the Committee comprises of four former Test umpires with Manager-Umpires functioning as coordinator. The Committee formulates training programmes, conduct examinations and plans activities for the improvement of umpiring standards.
Assessment
The performance of umpires is constantly monitored through assessment and feedback systems. A written examination, an interview and comments made in captains' & match referees' reports are taken into account in assessing the Premier & Sara Panel umpires. They also undergo a medical test.
Opportunities have been provided for the umpires to be upgraded according to their performance. Similarly they will be relegated if their performance is unsatisfactory.
Use of technology
Ball gauges, light metres, VCD clips on field performance and computer progammes are used with a view to enhancing the quality of umpiring.
Seminars
Seminars and workshops are held for referees and umpires to keep them abreast with ICC decisions in respect of cricketing matters like periodical changes in conditions of play.
Sponsor
A three-year sponsorship deal has been finalized with Mobitel covering the domestic tournaments organised by SLC. A sponsorship fee of Rs 3.5 million will be paid in the first and second years with provision for a 20% increase in the third year. The sponsor will also bear 50% of the expenses for clothing which will carry signage of the sponsor.
