Domestic Cricket |
|
|
| Domestic cricket is the nursery of Sri Lanka cricket. The national cricketers come through this process. Cricket clubs throughout the country participate in a number of domestic tournaments that underpin a new Inter-Provincial Tournament which is currently a cornerstone of the revamped domestic structure. |

Inter-Provincial Tourmanent
A five-team Inter-Provincial Tournament was introduced in 2007 to help increase the standard of domestic cricket, ensuring the best players play against each other. The goal is to reduce the large gulf that existed between club and international cricket.
The first Inter-Provincial Tournament has already been completed and the next tournament kicks-off in April/May 2008 with a T20 competition. Five teams captained by national players played in the Inter-Provincial One Day tournament in December 2007/January 2008. The teams were designated Basnahira Uthura (Western North), Basnahira Dakuna (Western South), Wayamba (North Western), Ruhuna (South) and Kandurata (Central).
Twenty matches will be played on a league basis prior to the final in the Twenty/20 tournament. Ten matches on a league basis and a final will be played in the 4-day tournament scheduled for January 2009. These three tournaments will form the permanent provincial calendar.
The Premier League
A two-tier first class tournament – called the Premier League – has been introduced at the top level. Premier Tier A comprises of ten teams. They play three tournaments – Premier League, Limited Overs and T20.
The League matches are played over four-days. Ten teams are selected for the Premier Tier B to play three-day League matches and a one day tournament. The top team in Tier B gets promoted to Tier A for the next season while the bottom team in Tier A is demoted to Tier B.
P.Sara Trophy
The P.Sara Trophy is the next level in domestic cricket where 20 teams participate in League and One day tournaments. League matches are played over three days.
Donovan Andree Trophy
The Donovan Andree Trophy forms the third level. Twenty four teams participate in the two-day tournament.
Division III
A host of clubs participate in the Division III tournament. |
