Clacton was first used as a first-class venue in 1931 in the match against
Lancashire. Its position as an Essex ground was reinforced after the 1933 move
away from Leyton. The Clacton week did well for another 30 years, until Essex
cricket was given a new base at Chelmsford. After this it was felt that there
was no longer a need for as many festival matches.
