Commentator nearly comes a cropper

It's an easy life being a media pundit. Sit there in front of a monitor whilst watching the high drama that is Twenty20 cricket. A format of the game that has been embraced by players and commentators alike, adding extra competitiveness to the summers county season and providing teams with a fresh new challenge to wipe away those C&G cup blues.

However, due to the high tempo in which Twenty20 cricket is played, there is an increased likelihood that a stray ball might be crowd bound and even the journalists aren't safe. On Monday, BBC Wales' Edward Bevan had an experience he won't forget in a hurry.

Whilst commentating on Glamorgan's crunch Twenty20 match with Gloucestershire at Cardiff, Glamorgan batsman Richard Grant launched into a shot that was destined to be a maximum.

"That's coming towards us." Bevan bellowed as a loud crash of leather on glass could be heard. "It's come through the commentary box," He quite rightly pointed out.

Sharing this unique experience with Bevan was co-commentator and former Glamorgan and England fast bowler, Steve Watkin who jokingly said: "I should have caught that one, shouldn't I?"

On a more serious note, both men felt they were very lucky not to be hurt in the freakish incident. Bevan said: "Quite seriously, it could have been quite dangerous because it came straight through the window and Byron Davies, who was scorer, did have a cut on his arm."

The main action of the night saw the home side lose to Gloucestershire by five wickets, meaning their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals are virtually over after suffering their third defeat in four games.
