So, what happened today?

Pat Cummins held the record for being the most expensive player in the history of the IPL when he was snapped up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 20.50 crore (US$2,470,000 approx.). But that record only lasted a few minutes as his fellow countryman Mitchell Starc swooped in and shattered the record for the most expensive player at an IPL auction after being brought by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 24.75 crore (US$2,982,000 approx.).
Starc said that it was "humbling to still feel like I'm wanted or needed" as he returns to the IPL after an eight-year hiatus.
The New Zealand allrounder, Daryl Mitchell also caused a bidding war and he was picked up by Chennai Super Kings for a whopping INR 14 crore. Harshal Patel raked in INR 11.75 crore and was picked by Punjab Kings while Alzarri Joseph was brought by RCB for 11.50 crore. Most of the expected players were picked up by the various franchises. Steven Smith, however, did not find a new home. The ODI World Cup performers were in the limelight with New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra, Australia batter Travis Head, South Africa allrounder Gerald Coetzee, and Sri Lanka quick Dilshan Madushanka all landing landed.
Talking about the surprise picks, UP top order batter Sameer Rizvi topped that list after he was picked by CSK for INR 8.4 crore. Jharkhand's Kumar Kushagra was snapped up for INR 7.2 crore by Delhi Capitals while Shahrukh Khan went to Gujarat Titans for INR 7.4 crore.
One of the biggest surprises came late in the auction when the uncapped 21-year old Robin Minz, a wicketkeeper from Jharkhand was sold for INR 3.6 crore to Titans.
Here's a complete round-up of all that happened at the IPL auction today. You can also take a look at all the squads right here. A list of all the sold and unsold players can be viewed here.

Did the franchises believe the 20-crore barrier will be breached?

Sanjeev Goenka, LSG owner: Frankly, I can speak for myself. We did not have any preconceived notions. We were looking at players who would fit in with our purse. Who knows the 25 crore barrier will get breached next year.
Kumar Sangakkara: We knew it would get breached but not by us. Mini auctions are notorious for that. A high purse and low supply players can go for that. It can happen and it did happen.

Is Kumar Sangakkara happy with the picks?

Kumar Sangakkara: Well, I think everyone will want to get bargains, but in small auctions that is not possible. Very happy with the way the auction went. We had clear plans and knew the players we needed. Rovman Powell was a necessity and we did stretch for him, so we are pleased with the day. So, was the case with Shubham Dubey. We would love a lot more money. Powell was the highest-ranked player we had for the spots available. Harry Brook was next. Rovman had full availability and that was the thing we considered.

Mark Boucher on the leadership change at MI

"Well, we've had conversations with certain team members in that leadership within the group. I think it's purely just a transitional phase, you know, the game of cricket. Mumbai Indians moves on forward. The road's been fantastic for us. He's [Hardik Pandya] been a stalwart for Mumbai Indians. He's done really well. This is just a decision that is made by us to move forward and get into a transition phase with a new captain. And if we take all the emotions aside and all that type of stuff, that's simply what it is all about.
"Can I say anything about it? I'm not too sure. I've heard rumours via social media and all that type of stuff, but I'm not really into social media stuff. As far as I can say is that it was handled by us in the best way possible. We understand there are emotions around everything but this is purely a transitional phase for Mumbai Indians and decisions were made by us to, move forward and that's where we are at the moment."

Why did RCB go for Alzarri Joseph?

RCB's Mo Bobat on Alzarri Joseph: So look, we're delighted to have Alzarri. From our perspective, he was in our top three targets from an overseas pace bowling perspective. You're always trying to navigate through the auction order, which makes things slightly tricky. And ideally, in an ideal world, we'd like probably for Starc to come out earlier and we can have a good crack at him and then, and then move on to, you know, your next target. But from our perspective, we looked at what was left with the other team's finances and that's a tough call for us and we made a good judgment call, I think, to bring forward our interest in Alzarri and to have a good go at him. He's a player that we really like. Now with Alzarri, he's both high pace, he's got a high release point, so he gets bounce. We know bounce is important at the Chinnaswamy. He's also got fantastic death skills. You look at his record and he stacks up against anyone at the death. He's also someone that's playing regular international cricket all around the world and franchise cricket all around the world. So he's someone that can adapt to conditions and surfaces. So we're pretty happy with Alzarri in that sense. And he's someone also that the captain knows really well. So Faf and him have a really good relationship and they've got a real trusted dynamic between them. So for us, it ticks a lot of boxes.
On Yash Dayal: With Yash Dayal, obviously, a slightly different pick in that sense that he's a domestic player that's had some experiences. We like the left-arm angle. We like the fact that he moves the ball up front. We want to make sure we've got the right battery of bowlers domestically that can supplement the likes of Alzarri. Obviously, we've got Cameron Green as well. So we think we've got a really nice balanced attack with real variety and we wanna make sure that we have got variety whenever we step out in the field from a pace bowling perspective. So we've got enough bounce, we've got enough pace. we've got Siraj who's a champion, swing bowler up front, and we've got a left-arm angle. So it's just putting together our arsenal to take on the opposition.

Here's Shahrukh Khan, who raked in big money

TN mates in squad: We've got 4 Chennai boys and great to be a part of that squad because of the way they've played last 2 years.
TNPL Purple cap holder: 100% can bowl. Got my bowling going in the TNPL and that helps here to. Definitely want to chip in with the ball if given the opportunity.
His role in GT after Hardik is out: I'll be playing at No. 6 or 7 for sure. The way I look at it, I'm ready for anything. I've batted at No. 4 in tournaments in Chennai. The way Gujarat Titans have made their players comfortable, I'm very happy to go there.
Batting alongside Miller: I've been a big fan of him for the past 10 years. He's the guy who comes in big games. He's the guy who wins big games. To be playing alongside him I'm looking forward to lot more. The way he's calm under pressure and the way he's played for SA and GT.

The bids have quickly risen to 95 lakh and now at 1 crore with LSG. RCB are not going anywhere though. The bids have reached 2 crore now as RCB take a moment.
Siddharth has been snapped up by LSG for 2.4 crore.
M. Siddharth was part of Lycia Kovai Kings at the TNPL 2023 and picked 11 wickets in nine matches. Here's Deiva: M Siddharth, who has been Sai Kishore's understudy for a number of a years at TN, could finally get a chance to play in the IPL. He won the most recent TNPL with Lyca Kovai Kings and has a fizzing arm ball in his repertoire. He was CSK's net bowler last season at Chepauk and has even had a stint with the Indian team as their net bowler. His state captain Dinesh Karthik rates him very highly. And Siddharth is arguably the best fielder in the TN side.

Kumar Kushagra snapped up by Capitals for 7.20 crore

CSK is quick to open the bid for Kumar Kushagra, who has a base price of 20 lakh. Gijarat Titans are quick to have their paddle up as well for the Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter. Titans raise the bid to 65 lakh before Capitals come in and take the bid forward. The 1 crore mark is already breached, so is the 20 crore mark. Massive money for the youngster.
Oh, this is a proper bidding war for Kushagra between Capitals and Titans. 1...2...3...4...5...6...7! The bidding has moved forward in a jiffy.
Capitals have bagged Kumar Kushagra for INR 7.20 crore.
Here's Shashank on Kushagra: All it takes is one game. This isn't a tagline, but a mantra that reflects the rise of the young Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter Kushagra. Numbers don't suggest he has the kind of consistency captains and coaches would like, but if you dig deeper, there's raw potential of the kind scouts look for.
One such knock in the Vijay Hazare Trophy could yet prove to be a turning point. Chasing 355 against Maharashtra, Kushagra came in at No. 6 for Jharkhand and hit an unbeaten 67 off 37 balls, with four fours and five sixes, to clinch an improbable win.
A number of scouts in attendance that day were impressed by the ferocity of his big hitting, an aspect he has gradually worked on since moving into a middle-order role. Kushagra has, over time, become Jharkhand's first-choice wicketkeeper primarily because Ishan Kishan has mostly been away on national duty; and while he yearns to be more consistent, he has shown enough glimpses of his ability, like he did against Maharashtra. With both Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders looking for an able Indian wicketkeeper, Kushagra will keep his fingers crossed.

And, here's Starc

Here's Starc talking to the host broadcaster:
Bidding process emotion: "It was a shock, of course. My wife Alyssa is with the women's team in India so she was getting updates quicker than what I was seeing on screen. Surprised but thrilled."
Cummins v Starc money: "Our Test squad whatsapp group has been going off to say its our shout to get dinner next. Something to do ahead of the Boxing Day Test. Special night for both of us."
Long layoff from IPL, chosen not to be for a while, thought process. Approach: "Been a while, yes. I've been involved with RCB in 2014-15, then picked up by KKR in 2018 but got injured. But I've been prioritising international cricket and Test cricket for Australia. Coming into the back end of this year and next year, it's much quieter for Australia as a group so excited to be involved. A good chance to play some really competitive T20 cricket in the best T20 league going around with a T20 World Cup coming up."
Price tag validation, confirmation? "Humbling to still feel like I'm wanted or needed I guess. My gameplay hasn't changed much across formats except few things here and there. Hopefully the experience can translate to some success. Not too much else to be said."
Did you have any idea about this much money? "Nothing I could've dreamt of. A few teams were looking to bolster their bowling attacks but there are a plethora of great bowlers in that list. Pat has gone to Sunrisers, but that's where he was at KKR, and I hope to fill his shoes there."
"The phones had a few messages coming through. A few guys from KKR touched base. We'll get some feedback on what is expected and what I can bring to the table, not just from the point of view of skillsets."
Price weighs on your mind? Approach given the amount of money, pressure: "No doubt there'll be some pressure that comes with the territory. But having the extra experience I have from my last IPL hopefully helps. Few ups and downs I've had before but this comes with the territory. Try to be successful and have as much impact as possible."

The bid quickly rises up to 1 crore, and is going beyond. No team wants to back off. Will the 2 crore mark be breached? Yes, it does as Titans raise their paddle but CSK are adamant.
Up to 3 crore...4 crore...5 crore. CSK have taken the bid as far as 5.60 crore, and there goes the 6 crore mark. With CSK at 6 crore as Titans take a minute. And they carry the bid on. Wowza! The 7 crore mark is breached. Up to 7.60 crore now with CSK.
Chennai Super Kings have snapped up Sameer Rizvi for INR 7.60 crore. Delhi Capitals come in now at 7.80 crore. But CSK have their paddle up for 8 crore, but Capitals are going ahead.
Sameer Rizvi goes to CSK for 8.40 crore
Shashank Kishore talks about Rizvi: Rizvi, 20, hit the most sixes for Kanpur Superstars at the UP T20 League. He also made two blistering hundreds and finished with 455 runs in nine innings in the tournament. It earned him a trial at three franchises, including Punjab Kings, which his state coach Sunil Joshi is a part of. However, commitments with UP's Under-23 squad meant Rizvi had to miss the trials. But he gave more than a glimpse of his potential in his first outing with the Under-23s, smashing 91 off 65 deliveries in a one-day game against Rajasthan. That was the start of a dream run that culminated in UP winning the tournament, with Rizvi hitting a match-winning 84 from 50 balls in the final. He finished the tournament as the highest run-getter.

Shubham Dubey up first in set 6

A base price of INR 20 lakh and Delhi Capitals open the bid. Rajasthan Royals come in at INR 25 lakh. Capitals and Royals are vying for Dubey.
The two aren't stopping. Up to 60 lakh now, and the bid goes up to 95 lakh now, and Capitals are up at 1 crore. And they are still at it: Royals and Capitals. The bid has reached 2.40 crore, with Capitals.
Will the 3 crore mark be breached? Oh, it does. And quickly approaching 4 crore. Wow! Delhi Capitals swiftly take the bid to 4 crore and beyond. The 5 crore mark is now breached. With Royals at the moment on INR 5.40 crore. Capitals take a moment and raise the bid to 5.60 crore but Royals are not backing down.
The bid is sealed. Royals grab Shubham Dubey for INR 5.80 crore!
Who's Shubham Dubey you ask? Shashank Kishore has the answer: Dubey has proved to be a point of difference, with several talent scouts impressed with his performances at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Playing lower down in the middle order, Dubey, a left-hand batter, made 221 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 187.28. The highlight of the tournament was his part in Vidarbha scaling a chase of 213 against Bengal, their highest-ever successful chase, with 13 balls to spare. Coming in as an Impact Player at No. 5, Dubey finished with an unbeaten 58 from just 20 balls, hitting three fours and six sixes.
Deivarayan Muthu further adds: In Jitesh Sharma's absence, Shubham Dubey, the explosive left-handed middle-order batter, stepped up as Vidarbha's finisher in the most recent SMAT. Dubey had attended trials with a number of franchises, including DC and RR who are currently locked in a bidding war for him. Dubey was injured around the time of the last IPL auction, but he's in demand in this mini-auction

Venky Mysore on the record Mitchell Starc signing

"Well, you know, I think my take on this is if you sort of look at it from the set of lenses of a price you pay for a player. And now it seems like wow, 24.75. I was telling someone that the salary cap of a team when IPL started in 2008 was 20 crores, the entire salary cap. So things have changed, right? But, you know, I think our view is, when the auction is over, all the 10 teams are going to walk out of the auction having spent 100 crores and each team decides to slice it differently. So what you've paid to somebody up down what not is matter of perspective. Ultimately, we're all spending the same amount of money."
"When you plan your team, from a retention standpoint, with the auction so far away, you have no idea of who are the other players from other teams who are being released, trades happening, and all that. So it's a very dynamic environment. So you don't also go into the auction with a mindset... I mean, we had options. You have to have options, like like they do. We could have been in the same shoes answering saying, Sorry, we lost out to GT. And we have a plan. And so I think everybody comes with their own plans. We've been around long enough. I mean, I don't know this is my 14th auction. And so, you know, you win some, you lose some, and you just have to be prepared. So it wasn't like you came in with that mindset, but obviously he was a preferred player from that skill set standpoint. It all sometimes works out. Initially, we were not successful in some of the bids. Maybe that worked in our favour, because we did end up having money to do this, otherwise, we might not have been able to do it. So we're just thankful that we were able to have him on our side."

GT, PBKS, DC on their purchases

Solanki, GT: I wouldn't call anybody a steal. That's disrespectful to that player to some extent. We value Omarzai and Umesh. You focus on skill sets than players at an auction. We got two players that we had in our pre-planning and we're looking forward to them joining us.
Sanjay Bangar,PBKS: Woakes covers two positions for us - Curran and Rabada. Having an Indian seamer is of immense value. Harshal bowls through the middle and death overs. It gives us an option of using Harshal as an Impact Player. That was the thinking behind acquiring both Woakes and Harshal.
Here's DC coach Ponting: Nice birthday, so far. Been here for a couple of days. We got a couple of players we wanted. We were a bit surprised with Brook's price. Getting him for the price we did allows us to go for Indian players and a foreign fast bowler.

Reactions to the historic bid for Starc

Venky Mysore, KKR CEO: Somebody told me just now before Starc's bid, they put up something like a historic bid. Very quickly history changed. IPL has changed and the salary cap has changed (laughs). Everyone comes with their own plans. This is my 14th auction - you know you win some and lose some. Starc was a proffered player from that skillset standpoint. We were not successful in some bids, so that favoured us. We were just happy to have him in our side.
Vikram Solanki, GT director of cricket: It shows the value of the player and the skillset he possesses. He's a fabulous player and lost out to KKR. But that's the way things go at the auction. We will make our way through the rest of the auction as we need to.

CSK coach Stephen Fleming on their plans

All well for CSK at the auction so far?
Fleming: You never think that, you always get some sort of an auction envy at the end of the day. You are very nervous at the start and a lot of mock auction and work on what you think players will go for. It's not just who you get but it is the planning you do behind that. And we came over the top there of Punjab, so Mitchell was obviously an important player and that can throw you a little bit. A lot of nerves around it. I am just happy you get that main path under your belt and this morning well went for us.
Mitchell as replacement for Ben Stokes?
Fleming: He played just one game, so not massive shoes. Daryl is a different type of player, but his performances over the last 18-24 months have warranted this type of a price. He is an unfashionable player, often goes under the radar. With his ability to play spin he is competitive and he is also a handy bowler. In Chepauk we can slide him into a role. Just like his performances, he fits in nicely and a good buy for us.
Any succession plans for MS?
We've had succession plans for MS for about 10 years. It is going to be a talking point., but he is as engaged and as enthusiastic as I have seen him for a while. While that passion is there for the team and franchise, we'll roll on.

Daniel Vettori, SRH coach, speaks

What does Travis bring to the platter?
Vettori: It is sort of tough to talk about what happened last season, but we were pretty adamant to get in left-handed batsmen. With Markram, Klaasen and Glenn Phillips in the squad, and with Brook there in the middle, felt there was similarity between the four of them. So we just wanted to get some options. Everyone knows how well he has been playing for an extended period of time now. So we are grateful to get him at that price. We expected him to go for more. The captaincy is just wait and see really. We don't want to burden guys just at this stage. There is a lot of cricket before the IPL, so we have to get through that and we can make a decision closer to the time.
What are the areas to look to strengthen in your team?
Vettori: It's such a small auction and as I said, the team felt relatively settled that we could one or two players. The left-handed opening batsman was a huge part of that. I didn't expect to be pushed that hard by Chennai but happens and then obviously looking at their quality at the top. There are so many good players available and when you have that big purse, you can target one of them and hope to get them. That was the case with Cummins and obviously there are still some very good players to come. If we missed out on Cummins, we would have targeted them.

Mitchell Starc fetches all-time high 24.75 crore from KKR

Mitchell Starc is in the house. Hold onto your hats. Base price: 2 crore. DC open the bidding. Pant raises the paddle for the Aussie left-arm quick. MI challenge DC. Pant raises the paddle once again. Mahela is also interested in Starc. Well, who isn't? Where are you, KKR?
DC and MI battle it out for the gun overseas quick. MI in the lead as the bid shoots up to 8 crore. DC aren't tapping out; they have the money. Hello, KKR enter at 9.8 crore.
Expectedly, the bid has touched 10 crore. New bidder: GT. Nehra loves his left-arm fast bowlers. Starc is back in the IPL after eight years, but he continues to be a hot favourite among the franchises.
GT and KKR are now locked in the bidding for Starc. GT in front at 12 crore. KKR keep challenging them. They are desperate for an experienced overseas fast bowler to back up Narine, Varun and Suyash.
Starc is catching up with the record IPL bid of his Aussie captain Cummins. KKR raise it up to 15 crore. Titans are ready to fork out 15.5 crore for Starc.
This isn't entirely unexpected. GT elevate the bid to 18 crore. Starc's bid hits 19 crore. He beats Curran's auction record.
GT send it up to 20 crore. Applause all around. KKR are still in it. It's 20.5 crore for Starc - he catches up with Cummins. New all-time auction record: GT in front at 21 crore.
Oh! This is not over yet. GT are KKR are still locked in an intense bidding war. Starc's bid is 10 minutes and ticking. Will the bid hit 25 crore? KKR fans are celebrating at the venue, but hold on. GT are back in at 24 crore. More applause.
Gambhir has a quiet word with Venky Mysore. Nehra is also having a discussion with the GT analyst. We pause for a bit. But the bidding continues for the Australia quick. This is probably more money than some sides' whole purse.
Mysore and Gambhir deliberate once again. Long discussion now at the GT table. How about Starc bowling in tandem with Rashid? Nah, GT tap out. Sold to KKR for 24.75 crore!
Phew, that was a record-breaking bid. Time for KKR to celebrate. Mitch Starc is back in the IPL after eight years and how!
Here is Sampath Bandarupalli: "Sold price of only 11 players across all the auctions combined before today is higher than Mitchell Starc's current bid". Wow!

RCB snap up Alzarri Joseph for 11.5 crore

Alzarri Joseph, the WI fast bowler, enters at 1 crore. CSK open the bidding for Joseph. He played for JSK in the SA20 last season. DC jump in and compete with CSK for Joseph.
Joseph could be a fine back-up for Pathirana or perhaps even start ahead of Pathirana. But DC aren't letting him go easily. DC in front at 3 crore.
Oh hello! New bidder: LSG jump in as the bid passes 4 crore and then 5 crore. LSG in the lead at 5.2 crore.
He was once a 13th round pick in the CPL, but here he is in demand in the IPL. Can hit speeds north of 140kph and can bowl two bouncers in an over. LSG have taken the bid up to 6.4 crore.
Joseph now attracts a bid from Andy Flower. The pair worked together at St Lucia Kings in the CPL. Joseph has quickly become a millionaire. The bid hits 10 crore.
LSG and RCB battle it out for Joseph. RCB back in the lead at 11.5 crore. Whopper! CSK deliberate. They don't have enough money. Joseph sold to RCB for 11.5 crore. This is RCB's first buy of the IPL 2024 auction.
Alzarri Joseph's 11.5 crore is the second highest auction price for a West Indian, behind Nicholas Pooran's 16 crore in 2023 by LSG

Daniel Vettori on the Cummins record-buy

“Someone else desperately wanted him as well, that’s why he got pushed to that high number. Because our team is relatively settled and we have the budget, and we have already picked up Travis Head and Hasaranga, we felt like we’d covered most things that we wanted at the auction, so we had the ability to spend that much.”

CSK splurge 14 crore on Daryl Mitchell

Another World Cup hero. He has a great time of it and scored two centuries against India - at the league stage and the semifinal. Delhi enter the bidding at 1 crore, followed by Punjab Kings. The bid quickly moves forward with Kings breaching the 3 crore mark. He has been a part of Rajasthan Royals earlier in the IPL.
Neither Delhi or Punjab are letting Mitchell slide. At 5 crore at the moment with Punjab Kings. Delhi quickly raise it further, and are at 6 crore. His middle-order ball striking and handy medium pace could be useful on the Indian surface. And here's the bid gone up to 7 crore by Punjab. Just these two teams who are desperate to have Mitchell in their line-up.
The bidding has gone past the 8 crore mark, and is settled on 8.20 crore with Punjab. Is that it? Nope, Delhi back at it and Daryl Mitchell becomes the third millionaire of this set. Punjab move it up to 9.40 crore!
Delhi are in a deep discussion. Will they take it to 10 crore? Oh, yes, they do. Punjab right back at them at 10.25 crore. Amazing! No signs of stopping just yet. Delhi raise the bid to 10.50...10.75 with Punjab...11 with Delhi. And they are still going.
Delhi have raised the bid to 11.50 crore. Will Punjab go further? They have 17.35 crore in their purse. And, they do. Delhi are out of the race.
Does Daryl Mitchell go to Punjab Kings for INR 11.75 crore? Nooooo, he doesn't. CSK come in at 12 crore. They have the purse for it. The battle of the Kings now. CSK have quickly raised the bid to 13.75 crore. Lots of discussions at the Punjab table. And Kings have raised their paddle for a 14 crore bid.
Phew, and that's that. Daryl Mitchell goes to Chennai Super Kings for INR 14 crore. A potential replacement for Ben Stokes? Time will tell

Harshal goes to Punjab for 11.75 crore

Gujarat Titans enter the bid at INR 2 crore. Kings enter the bidding for the India allrounder. He was with RCB last season. The two are going for him as the bid settles at 3.80 crore before Titans go for 4 crore.
The bid quickly moves up to 5 crore and is moving forward. Titans and Punjab at it. The 6 crore mark is breached. Neither team is backing and here is is. Harshal Patel becomes the second millionaire of the day.
Titans breach the 10 crore mark for Harshal but Punjab quickly raise their paddle. Both Ahmedabad and the new venue in Mohali have longer boundaries and Harshal's death bowling and wicked slow bouncers as well as various slower balls could prove effective. Or at Lucknow, who have now come into the auction at 11 crore.
Punjab Kings are at 11.75 crore. Super Giants can't go very far as their purse is at 13.75 crore. Kings it is who snap up Harshal for INR 11.75 crore.

History: SRH grab Cummins for record-breaking 20.50 crore

Here's the Australia World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins, with a base price of 2 crore. CSK quickly enter the bid, and here come Mumbai Indians. A fierce bidding battle between the two and the bid has quickly risen to 4.8 crore with CSK.
RCB now into the act as they raise the bid to 5 crore, and CSK don't take much time to raise their paddle again. RCB ain't backing down. Will Cummins become the first millionaire today? Neither team is backing down. The bid stands at 7.40 crore with RCB and CSK quickly raise it.
RCB stand tall at 7.80 crore. Is that it? Nope, SRH come in now. And here's our first millionaire of the day as SRH quickly take the bid past 8.40 crore. A bidding war between RCB and SRH and SRH it is who take the bid to 10 crore. Big, big money for Pat Cummins.
RCB and SRH both want Cummins big time. SRH have taken the bid to 12 crore. Cummins did not play the IPL last year and was with KKR the year before last. The bid is at 12.75 crore with RCB at the moment, and quickly raised by SRH.

SRH start the bidding for Head, who was the Player of the Match in the WC semis and finals. CSK now jump in to compete with SRH. Back-up for Mooen Ali? Head can also bowl handy offspin.
SRH raise the paddle and the bid has touched 4 crore now. CSK are back in it, but do they have a slot in the XI for Head, who has the most impact at the top? Slow raising of paddles at the SRH and CSK tables. CSK in front at 5 crore. SRH aren't backing out. Both teams have the financial muscle to go for the players they want.
The bid has reached 6 crore - it's currently with SRH. Is it a winning bid for Head? Nah, CSK are back in at 6.2 crore.

The first player up for grabs is WI T20I capt Rovman Powell. He's a Royal in the CPL. He has set his base price at 1 crore. KKR open the bidding for Powell. RR jump in and compete for Powell. Remember, Powell also captains Barbados Royals in the CPL?
The bid has touched 2 crore. It's with KKR. Powell can also bowl a bit and has some cutters in his repertoire. RR and KKR continue to battle it out for Powell. The WI big-hitter, though, is vulnerable to wristspin.
Okay, the bid has quickly jumped up to 4 crore. Both Royals and KKR are still in it. Will he join his idol Andre Russell at KKR? No activity at the DC tables yet. They had released Powell ahead of this auction.
RR in the lead at 5.4 crore. KKR aren't letting Powell go. Venky Mysore, KKR's CEO, raises the paddle once again. I think KKR was also Powell's first IPL franchise.

Hear from the LSG camp

Justin Langer, LSG head coach: "Very much excited. When it comes to the action, that will be the most exciting time. The fans are an important part of every franchise and it's my first time [at the IPL auction]. We've got a settled team already and just have a couple of slots to fill. I'm feeling pretty relaxed. Other teams have more slots to fill. We're hopeful on a couple of players. Everyone will have different needs and wants. I've always believed the most important person in a T20 team is the captain. Rahul captained India in SA a couple of nights ago. He's a terrific person and calm under pressure. Can't wait to work under him. I'm just looking forward to the atmosphere."

    Rachin Ravindra in the spotlight

Being able to take calculated risks like that and seeing them through to the desired result elevates Rachin Ravindra from a simple accumulator to a skilful disruptor and isn't that the profile of player who makes T20 franchises break the bank?
Adam Milne On Rachin Ravindra: "Rachin's shown what a class player he is at the World Cup so I'll be excited to see him to go over there if he gets picked up and play some T20 cricket. He's already a bit of a star isn't he, he's scored a number of runs over in that World Cup so for a man that has worked as hard as he has, I've seen him behind the scenes in Wellington and he works incredibly hard on his game so I've got no doubt that he can succeed to be one of New Zealand's greatest hopefully."
Mark Chapman: "You always have hope that you might get picked up but to be honest I'm probably more interested in watching what happens with Rachin. No surprise that Rachin’s one of those players being talked about given his performances in the World Cup."

Gear up for the IPL 2024 auction

It's that time of the year once again. The IPL 2024 auction is almost upon us. Mini-auctions tend to throw up the tournament's most expensive buys. In the last auction, Sam Curran won a deal worth INR 18.5 crore (USD 2.26 million approx.) with Punjab Kings. Will Mitchell Starc break that auction record in his return to the IPL after eight years?
Pat Cummins and Travis Head, who won the ODI World Cup last month, are also set to trigger bidding wars. How about South Africa's speed demon Gerald Coetzee and NZ sensation Rachin Ravindra? And will TN finisher Shahrukh Khan join the OG finisher MS Dhoni at CSK? There's plenty to look forward to on December 19 in Dubai. We will bring you blow-by-blow accounts of bidding wars, read-time squad updates, and expert analysis from Tom Moody and Wasim Jaffer. Our blog coverage will begin at 12.30pm IST on Tuesday.
