Mercifully the weather improved, the players heaved a sigh of relief and Sunday's schedule in the South Zone inter university cricket tournament in Chennai went on unhindered and easy victories were the order of the day.
Calicut for example wasted no time in racing to a ten wicket victory over PS Telungu at the Pachaiyappa's college ground. Batting first, PS Telungu were skittled out for 31 runs in 19.5 overs. They lost their first six wickets for eight runs with the top five batsmen failing to score. All of them were out to Hisham. Naveen Babu with 13 was the only batsman to reach double digits. Hisham finished with five for 11 from five overs. The Calicut openers hit off the requisite runs in just 6.5 overs.
At the University Union ground, Alagappa defeated University of Agricultural Sciences by 98 runs. Winning the toss, Alagappa scored 212 for nine in 49 overs with opener S Vijayakumar top scoring with 93. He hit seven fours. In reply University of Agricultural Sciences made a shocking start losing half the side for 18 runs. They never really recovered and were all out for 114 runs in 39 overs. Opening bowlers Alagesan and Raja Manikandan who did the early damage finished with three wickets each. The former had the excellent figures of 9-4-7-3.
Karnataka cruised to an eight wicket victory over Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) at the Sree Ramachandra Medical college grounds in Porur. Batting first, JNTU were shot out for 60 in 20.1 overs. Opener Vishnuvardhan Babu with 18 was the only batsman to reach double figures, extras being the next best with 14. Karnataka raced to victory in just 11.3 overs.
Anna scored an emphatic 138-run win over Cochin at the Anna University grounds. Batting first, Anna hit up an imposing 285 for seven in 50 overs with opener Vijay Sai Suri leading the way with a strokefilled 97. Valuable knocks by Rajkumar (30) and Praveesh Kumar (47 not out) and the large number of extras (53) pushed the score along. In reply, Cochin were dismissed for 147 in 39 overs, the total being boosted by as many as 37 extras.
