Carib Beer Series, 1st round, 1st day

Chattergoon ton puts Guyana on top

Cricinfo staff

January 5, 2008

Guyana 267 for 4 (Chattergoon 130, Sarwan 63*) v Trinidad and Tobago
Scorecard

A patient century from Sewnarine Chattergoon ensured Guyana took the first day's honours in the opening Carib Beer Series match against Trinidad and Tobago at Queen's Park Oval. Guyana finished on a healthy 267 for 4 with Chattergoon making 130 as the hosts, Trinidad, received a boost before the start of the game with Brian Lara being declared fit.

After Guyana captain Ramnaresh Sarwan decided to bat, Chattergoon, who has played three ODIs for West Indies, took full advantage of a placid track to help himself to his fourth first-class century, spanning more than five hours and including 16 boundaries. He was involved in a 126-run partnership with Sarwan for the fourth wicket before giving a catch to Lara at second slip off left-arm-spinner Dave Mohammad. Sarwan remained unbeaten on a three-hour 63, while the other significant contribution to the Guyana total came from 20-year-old Leon Johnson, who was dropped twice during his 41.

Barbados 64 for 3 (Pascal 3-28) trail Windward Islands 190 (Sebastian 68, Benn 4-30) by 126 runs
Scorecard

Barbados shot out Windward Islands for 190 but conceded some of the advantage by losing three wickets for 64 in their reply at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent. Liam Sebastian top scored with 68 for Windward while left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn impressed with figures of 4 for 30 for Barbados. Sebastian, who was dropped by Dale Richards on 3, hit ten fours in his 125-ball innings before offering a catch to short leg off Benn. Hyron Shallow made a confident 30 before being forced to retire hurt due to a stomach bug. Barbados' reply was rocked by three blows from fast bowler Nelon Pascal, who claimed figures of 3 for 28.

Jamaica 59 for 2 trail Leeward Islands 155 (Willett 53, Brown 5-31) by 96 runs
Scorecard

Odean Brown's five-wicket haul put Jamaica in charge of their match against Leeward Islands at Sabina Park. Opting to bat first, Leeward were all out for 155 with Tonito Willet top scoring with 53. Willet and Javier Liburd (43), the only two Leeward batsmen to get into double-figures, were involved in a 40-run stand for the third wicket. Jamaica's left-arm-spinner, Nikita Miller, chipped in with three wickets as Leewards lost their last eight wickets for 75 runs. Xavier Marshall remained not out on 27 in Jamaica's reply as they finished the day on 59 for 2.
